For startup founders

Find the first moment your product should remember.

You do not need a company-wide context project to ask a useful question. Choose one customer signal, one product response and a decision that the experiment can inform.

Choose the moment

Start with one customer who has to repeat themselves.

Look at the journey you can actually observe today. A founder-led onboarding conversation may be the source; a return visit may be the first place the product could use it.

Bound the experiment

Let one answer change one next step.

Choose the permitted input and the consuming product surface. Write down the default response and the proposed context-informed response before connecting them.

  1. Input: a stated goal from onboarding
  2. Boundary: the next product session
  3. Decision: keep, revise or stop the experiment

Learn before expanding

Review the response before interpreting the purchase.

First check whether the response used the right source and stayed within scope. Then observe the agreed journey events. A small experiment can expose missing instrumentation or an unhelpful signal without proving revenue lift.

Fictional example · illustrative, not a customer result

First-customer experiment card

Compare the current handoff with a proposed, source-connected record.

Before · context lost

  • Maya says in onboarding: “I need a short practice I can return to.”
  • The next session presents the same broad catalog to everyone.

After · proposed pilot artifact

  • Source: Maya’s onboarding answer; permitted use: session suggestions.
  • Proposed response: offer a short practice, show the reason and allow correction.
  • Observation: did Maya use, dismiss or correct the suggestion?

Review question
Would this be useful enough to test with the next customer? What would make you stop?

Prepare the conversation

Bring the work. Agree on what to evaluate.

Customer inputs

  • One onboarding or acquisition signal you are allowed to use
  • The current product response and the surface you can change
  • An owner for customer feedback and the events you can observe

Evaluation questions

  • Can the customer correct the signal before it is reused?
  • What counts as a relevant response in this narrow journey?
  • What evidence would justify another experiment rather than a wider rollout?
